Here's an expanded "Tips for Winterizing Your Plumbing in Center Line, MI" section for the Center Line, MI copy. Each tip is enhanced with additional detail to make it more practical and actionable for homeowners.
Exposed pipes in basements, crawl spaces, garages, and exterior walls are highly vulnerable to freezing temperatures. Use foam pipe insulation or wrap pipes in heat tape to protect them from the cold. Ensuring that these areas are well-insulated can further prevent freezing. If the weather is forecasted to drop significantly, consider leaving a small trickle of water running from faucets connected to exposed pipes, as the moving water is less likely to freeze.
Leaving hoses attached to outdoor faucets can trap water, which can freeze and expand, potentially causing pipes to burst. Disconnect and drain all hoses, then store them indoors during winter. It’s also helpful to shut off the water supply to outdoor faucets if they have a dedicated valve and open the faucet to drain any residual water. Consider installing insulated faucet covers for added protection against the cold.
Small gaps and cracks around doors, windows, and foundations can allow cold air to seep into your home and affect your pipes. Use caulk or weather stripping to seal any openings that could allow drafts near pipes or water lines. This simple step not only protects your plumbing but can also improve your home’s energy efficiency by keeping warm air inside and cold air out.
Keeping your thermostat set at a consistent temperature, especially during extremely cold weather, can help prevent pipes from freezing. Even if you're leaving home for an extended period, set your thermostat to no lower than 55°F to ensure a steady warmth. For areas with plumbing but poor heating, such as basements, consider using a portable heater to keep pipes warm, but always prioritize safety and avoid leaving heaters unattended.
If a pipe does burst, knowing where your main water shut-off valve is located can prevent extensive water damage. Familiarize yourself with its location, typically near the water meter or along an exterior wall. In an emergency, quickly shutting off the water supply can protect your home and give you time to call a plumber for assistance. Consider labeling the shut-off valve and practicing how to operate it to be prepared in a crisis.

Historically, the land that Center Line came to occupy was swamp and wilderness until the early nineteenth century. As land became scarce, French, German, Belgian, and Irish immigrants began clearing the forests and draining the swamps. Center Line was known as "Kunrod's Corner" during the mid-nineteenth century. The theory is that the French named it "Center Line" because it was the middle of three Potawatomi trails from Fort Detroit to northern trading posts. The "center line" was the trail used from Detroit to Utica. The community received its initial start when Catholics decided to build a church so that they would not have to walk to St. Mary's in Detroit for Sunday Mass. This church (St. Clement's) was established in 1854 and attracted more Catholic settlers into the area. In 1863, the first general store was constructed by Joeseph Buechel. On July 19, 1878, Hieronymous Engelmann was the first postmaster, and he was succeeded in 1885 by Sophia Buechel. The "Centre Line" post office closed on July 31, 1906, and the name was restored to Center Line thereafter. In this era, street car tracks connected Detroit to Center Line along Van Dyke Road, and Ten Mile Road was the final stop of the street car. The village was incorporated in 1925 in the center of Warren Township, which is now the city of Warren, and was incorporated as a city in 1936.
